Framework for Utilizing e-Learning for Education Equity

The framework we describe on utilizing e-learning for Education Equity has three interconnected parts. These are:

  • Reimagine
  • Repurpose
  • Create

In the following visual, we show how these three components or parts form a continuous cycle of iteration to build resilience and sustain the flow.

We begin by explaining the interconnectedness.

The framework and its component parts

What do we want to reimagine at ITfHESE?

E-learning

What do we want to repurpose?

The necessary vehicles that deliver e-learning.

What do we specifically want to create?

Excellent online education (not defined by current terms) that is accessible and affordable that is delivered by medical and public health schools in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC) via a new form of internet. (This internet system has not yet been created globally).

What should the engine for this be? Why?

Resilience. Because new ways of thinking always will face a barrage of negativity at first.

Why do all this?

Nelson Mandela put it beautifully- “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Why do we want to reimagine eLearning?

Because the status quo eLearning is neither universally accessible nor globally equitable.

What is the potential of eLearning?

At ITfHESE, we believe that when a quality eLearning program is developed and implemented in an innovative way, it can narrow the inequity gap in not only the education system as a whole, but also specifically in the medical and public health education systems in Low and Middle Income Countries ( LMIC).

What are the innovations that we want reimagined?

  • For asynchronous engagement: the technology that will enable an easily accessible, user-friendly, and inexpensive Learning Management System (LMS).
  • For synchronous engagement: the technology that will provide easily accessible, user-friendly, and inexpensive platform.
  • The internet delivery system: new technology that will address internet delivery hurdles because the current internet delivery system even though it has produced a lot of good, it is archaic.

What do we seek to understand?

The process engineering behind innovative eLearning modules.

Why?

Because we believe that the delivery of an excellent education is a human right and because we believe that technology is the vehicle that will hasten the attainment of that human right.

What needs to be repurposed for e-learning?

Cutting edge innovations in IT technology.

Why?

Because even though when an IT technology is created it is not necessarily done so with health and education systems in mind, it nonetheless can be utilized to propagate equity in these sectors.

How?

By adapting these advances in IT technology into the elearning delivery space to make elearning accessible, affordable, equitable and enjoyable.

What does ITHESE intend to do in this space?

Build Bridges.

ITfHESE is focused on building the bridge between those working in education/health system equity with those working in various innovations in IT technology, be it 5G, VR/AR, hologram, immersive technologies, to name a few in order to adapt these technologies to make elearning accessible, affordable, equitable, and enjoyable.

Conduct Research.

ITfHESE is focused on understanding how and in what context that these adaptations of technology innovations work in the elearning space. It will seek to understand the bottlenecks as well as the best practices for implementation.

Be Visionary.

ITfHESE is focused on thinking and working out of the box solutions with various stakeholders to propagate these adaptations.  Through this, it intends to accelerate equity in the education system, esp. in medical and public health schools in low-and-middle-income countries.
